Brightly hued paper lanterns add color to any gathering, whether you’re
celebrating the Chinese New Year, hosting a festive fiesta or just getting
together with friends. A garland of lights is easy to make, using items
widely available at craft or party stores. String the lanterns along the
porch to greet guests, hang them in the trees or along the deck to brighten
up a sunset soiree or swag them over the food table to add fun frivolity
indoors.
Makes one string of lantern lights. Increase quantity to make as
many lantern lengths as you like.

white paper lanterns (available at Cost Plus World Markets
or Pier 1 Imports) |
| 15 |
3-4" colored chemical glow sticks (available at party stores
or online at www.extremeglow.com) |
| 1 |
25-foot strand of Christmas lights – white or red |
| 1 |
box tree ornament hangers |
| 15 |
red and gold tassels (save money by purchasing after Holiday sales) |
| |
Hot glue gun |
| 1 |
box thumbtacks |
Directions:
- Use a hot glue gun to attach a tassel to the bottom of each lantern.
- Illuminate the lanterns by placing a colored chemical glow stick inside.
(If you use colored lanterns, use a clear glow stick.) Never put candles
inside paper lanterns – they will catch on fire!
- String white or red strands of Christmas lights in the trees or around
the ceiling – wherever you want the lanterns to hang. Secure with
thumbtacks.
- Using ornament hooks, hang the paper lanterns on the strands of lights,
spacing the lanterns about 18” apart. Bend the hooks closed, so
the lanterns won’t slip off.
